For me, September brings a different energy. The laid back holiday mode or sometimes heat addled sluggishness of summer, gives way to a sense of newness.

Perhaps it’s the memory of going back to school, which contains a hopeful element and the chance to start out fresh. Or, it could just be a subtle change in the air.

If you are fueled by the feeling of fresh starts, but are out of the writing habit, you might try beginning with a short story. Story ideas are everywhere. Choose a subject from your own experience, or if nothing comes to mind, story prompts can shake loose some surprising ideas.

When you begin your short story, make every word count. Words work to advance the story. If a word or sentence is unnecessary, edit it out. Be sure to stick to the point and avoid too much description.

A short story usually focuses on a few characters and one event. Keep your tale straightforward and simple, and take advantage of this energizing September air.
